Compliance & Enforcement
The Macon County Environmental Management Department is delegated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Bureau of Land to conduct an inspection and enforcement program. The County’s pollution control sites, including one active landfill, four closed landfills and two compost facilities, are periodically inspected. Inspections are also conducted at other sites within the county in response to complaints regarding the open dumping of waste.
In those situations when violations are cited, the department works with facility owners and responsible parties, aiming towards voluntary compliance. However, in cases with broad patterns of non-compliance, the department engages in enforcement actions in collaboration with the Macon County State’s Attorney’s Office to ensure resolution.
