Macon County has what is called a single-stream recycling program. Single-stream recycling allows residents to put recyclable materials such as paper, cans, cardboard and plastic into the same container, eliminating the need to separate recyclables. Through the program, Midwest Fiber Recycling utilizes its new state-of-the-art, partially automated single-stream materials recovery facility (located in Normal, IL) to sort out recyclable materials.
Single stream recycling makes recycling easier and because of this participation in recycling, initiatives continue to grow. Midwest Fiber’s Normal, Illinois facility now processes over 1 million pounds of single stream materials per week! But, we as users of single stream recycling must do our part to make sure the entire process moves as smoothly as possible. In order to do that we must be aware of what is and what is not acceptable for single stream processing. The list of accepted items varies slightly, depending on if items are collected from a curbside program or in Macon County Environmental Department’s rural drop-off recycling program. Paper, cardboard, plastic containers and cans are accepted by either collection method but glass is only accepted in curbside programs. To make processing easier, flatten boxes and place items loose in your recycling bin. Take advantage of such a simple and great program and do your part to make sure you are recycling the proper materials!
